United Airlines landing gear tires detaches after take off

United Airlines Flight 35, operated by a Boeing 777-200 with registration N226UA, was departing from San Francisco, CA, bound for Osaka Kansai, Japan.

Shortly after take off from runway 28R, the aircraft experienced an issue with the left main gear. Specifically, the inboard aft wheel separated from the gear strut and fell to the ground before the gear could be retracted.

The aircraft continued to climb to FL320. However, approximately 170 nautical miles northwest of San Francisco, the crew made the decision to return to the departure airport.

Eventually, they opted to divert to Los Angeles, CA, where the aircraft safely landed on runway 25L without further incident.

Emergency services inspected the airframe upon landing and found no damage, except for the missing wheel.

The landing caused no harm to the aircraft itself, although two parked cars on the ground suffered damage.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a statement confirming the safe landing of Flight 35 at Los Angeles International Airport at around 1:30 p.m. local time on March 7. The FAA announced that an investigation into the incident would be conducted.
